Streetdance 2011 at Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage

Street dance

Howard Cottage streetdancers put on a great show!

A summer holiday streetdance project for young Howard Cottage residents culminated in an electrifying Dancemania performance at the Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage.

For the sixth year running, young residents from Howard Cottage Housing Association got involved in a streetdance project during the summer holidays.

Howard Cottage Resident Involvement officer Jon Thurlow said: ‘This year more than 30 young people took part in the summer activity and most have continued by attending after-school dance classes.’

Having practised their routines for months, the Howard Cottage youngsters seized the opportunity to ‘strut their stuff’ in front of a sell-out crowd at this year’s Dancemania show – a celebration of contemporary dance from across the three counties.

It’s the fourth time that the Howard Cottage streetdancers have taken part in the show, but this year was extra special because they shared the bill with Nemesis dance group, who reached the Britain’s Got Talent final in 2008.

Despite some last-minute nerves, the Howard Cottage dancers enjoyed every minute of their performance. ‘Beforehand I was a bit nervous,’ said eight-year-old Soeli, ‘but when I got on stage I remembered the routine and my nerves went away!’

Seasoned Dancemania performer Stephen, aged 12, said: ‘Every year, the experienced dancers like me are encouraged to try more difficult routines and I have really enjoyed it.’ Eight-year-old Sahara added: ‘The dances were hard and sometimes challenging but they were fun!’

Nick Carter from Streetdance Productions, who taught the youngsters their routines, said: ‘The Howard Cottage dancers were well behaved, listened closely and worked very hard on their routines.’

The Howard Cottage streetdance classes were supported by a grant from Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation.
