The Common Housing Register
All applications for housing need to go via the Common Housing Register. This register is administered through the North Hertfordshire Housing Partnership which consists of Howard Cottage, North Herts Homes and North Herts District Council.

The main aim of the partnership is to enable applicants for housing in the North Herts area to fill in one application form that will offer applicants a wider choice of housing options whilst being considered by each landlord in accordance with its own lettings policy. Click to view our Lettings Policy (Word 293kb).

Applications
Application forms for the Common Housing Register can be requested from us (01462 683307) or the other partners. Application forms need to be returned to North Herts District Council for inclusion onto the Register.

If you need any further information on your application, please contact the
Housing Needs Department of North Herts District Council on 01462 474688. Please note that if you need to see an officer in person, North Herts DC operates an appointment system for applicant enquiries.

Transfer applicants are also included on the Common Housing Register.

If you are in other areas outside North Herts, please apply for housing via your local authority.

Frequently asked questions
How do I apply for housing?
Application forms for housing in North Herts are available from any member of the North Herts Housing Partnership. Applications for Howard Cottage will be administered by North Herts DC. Please refer to each partnership member for more information on their lettings policy.

If you are in other areas please contact your local authority.

Who should apply?
The application form is designed to enable the Housing Partnership to provide an assessment based upon your housing need. Property owners may be excluded by some partner members if they have the ability to purchase on the open market with the assistance of a mortgage where applicable.

Some partner members will require proof of a local connection or period of residence in the area before accommodation is offered.

All applicants must be aged 16 or over.

What if I need assistance in completing the application form?
Assistance with completing an application form can be requested from all partnership members. Please note, however, that Howard Cottage will only be accepting completed application forms from our current residents. All other applications will need to be returned to North Herts DC for processing.

What happens to my completed application?
Once you have completed an application form and returned it to North Herts DC, it will be registered and you will be advised, by letter, which organisations will be considering you for housing. If there are any queries concerning your application you will be contacted by telephone or by letter.

If the application form has not been fully completed or it does not provide enough information for North Herts DC to make an assessment then the application will be returned to you with a letter advising you of the information needed and a deadline date for return.

Once the application form has been accepted by North Herts DC a home visit will be organised to confirm your circumstances.

What if my housing situation changes?
If your circumstances change, such as an addition to the family or change of address, it is important that you inform the partner member responsible for processing your application immediately. In most cases it will be necessary for you to complete a new application form. There may be situations where an application may be cancelled or priority amended where there has been a substantial change in your housing situation.

If your circumstances have changed and you have not notified the partnership, we reserve the right to cancel your application.
